Egypt Cultural Tour: Discover the Land of the Pharaohs
A cultural tour of Egypt takes you to one of the most historically rich countries in the world. Egypt’s millennia-old culture is unique—it’s no coincidence that the country is home to two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Pyramids of Giza and the Lighthouse of Pharos. Hardly any other destination combines history, culture, and scenery as impressively as Egypt, the land of the pharaohs.
On your trip to Egypt, you’ll encounter fascinating monuments, mysterious temples, and the stories of the pharaohs and kings. But you’ll also be captivated by the picturesque coastlines, the mild climate, and the unique landscapes—reasons why many visitors return to this country time and again. From the bustling streets of Cairo to the tranquility of the desert, at every stage of a classic cultural tour of Egypt, you’ll experience a new facet of this extraordinary country.
Cairo: Gateway to Pharaonic History
Most classic cultural tours begin in Cairo, Egypt’s vibrant capital. Here, on the outskirts of the city, stand the world-famous Pyramids of Giza—the last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Right next to them, the Great Sphinx watches over the desert landscape, a landmark that has captivated travelers from all over the world for millennia.
Just a few kilometers away is the new Grand Egyptian Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including numerous treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb. A visit to this museum has become an essential part of any well-planned tour of Egypt and complements the picture travelers have already formed of the pyramids.
Historic Cairo, with its bustling bazaars—most notably the famous Khan el-Khalili—also invites you to explore. Amid spice merchants, goldsmiths, and traditional coffeehouses, you can feel the lively rhythm of a city where the ancient and the modern come together.
Luxor and the Valley of the Kings
From Cairo, the journey takes many visitors on to Luxor, which was once known as Thebes, the capital of ancient Egypt. Here, on the east bank of the Nile, the monumental temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor tower overhead—gigantic colonnades and obelisks that bear witness to the power of the pharaohs.
On the west bank, travelers will find the famous Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs such as Tutankhamun and Ramses II found their final resting place. The intricately painted burial chambers, with their well-preserved hieroglyphs and wall paintings, are among the most impressive testaments to ancient Egyptian civilization and are a staple of any classic cultural tour of Egypt.
The Nile Cruise: The Highlight of Any Trip to Egypt
Few elements define a cultural tour of Egypt as much as a Nile cruise. On the journey from Luxor via Edfu and Kom Ombo to Aswan, you’ll glide leisurely along the world’s longest river aboard a comfortable ship. From the sun deck, you’ll enjoy views of lush palm groves, small villages, and the endless expanse of the desert beyond.
Along the way, you’ll visit important temple complexes such as the Temple of Horus in Edfu—one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples—as well as the unique double temple at Kom Ombo, which is dedicated to two gods. Once you arrive in Aswan, you’ll see the tall dam, the picturesque Lake Nasser, and—for those who wish to travel further—the imposing temples of Abu Simbel.
